The holidays are a time of joy and celebration, but for many businesses, they can also be a stressful period for remaining adequately staffed. Employees often request days off, or work shorter hours. To top it off, many businesses experience a boom during the holidays, so demand is actually higher while staff is shorter. It can be tough managing these changes in your workforce during the holidays. We know how hard it is to have a shortage of employees right when you need them most, so here a few tips for the season that everyone will celebrate:
1. Stagger Vacations
If possible, try to minimize huge gaps in your workforce by making sure that employees don't all go on vacation the same week. There will of course be more popular days to take off, but you can limit the damage by working with your employees to stagger their schedules. Everyone still gets time off, but you'll have coverage when you need it.
2.Let employees work from home (if you can)
This is not an option for many businesses that require staff on-site. However, if you have non-critical tasks that can be accomplished from the comfort of your employees homes, allowing them to work remotely during the holidays will keep their spirits bright, and keep your business moving.
3. Hire Temporary Employees
Even if you're staggering vacations and allowing employees to work from home, it may not always be enough, especially if your business tends to surge during the holidays. The best way to ensure that you'll always be fully staffed is to have a reliable pool of temporary employees to draw from. Your full-time employees will thank you, and the workload will be more manageable for everyone.
